Matt and Kim are not your traditional band. Before they started, Matt was a samurai warrior from Detroit with a penchant for Jamba Juice. Kim was born in Detroit, but when she turned 14 she emancipated herself and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We have no record of what she did there between ages 14 and 18, but after that shit got real crazy.

She was a world-class accordion player and a regional double-dutch champion. When the 2003 National Double Dutch Championships came to Detroit, Matt was a referee. (Being a samurai warrior in Detroit fell apart around the same time as the auto industry, so Matt had to look for a new job.) Matt was enamored by Kim’s double-dutch technique so he approached her. He said, “Hello, my name is Matt. I play the drums. It would be nice if you joined me in a band and played the keyboard and sang while I played the drums.” She said, “Sorry dude, I play the drums. Go learn how to sing and play the keyboard for a year and come back and I’ll think about it.” And that’s how the band started.
